How South African Doctors Surgically Remove a Cell Phone Stuck in a Man's Throat+Video

A stomach-churning video has been released online which shows a cell phone being surgically removed from a man's mouth. In the video, an unidentified patient at a hospital in Klerksdorp, South Africa, was wheeled into the theatre with the gadget lodged in his throat. Lying in bed sedated with a group of medics crowded around, first, saliva is sucked from his gums and tongue, then metal clamps are inserted to prise out the electronic device.

As the phone slowly emerges, the surgeons' shocked expressions can be heard. Some even break into laughter as they struggle to contain their amazement.

Although the clip has only just resurfaced online, it was originally filmed in May 2012, by Edwin Shingo, one of the medical staff who witnessed the extraordinary scene. The patient is not named and there is no explanation as to how the phone got stuck in his throat. Watch the video after the cut
