Olusegun Obasanjo
will be held responsible should a military takeover of
the Nigerian
government happen, said a civil society activist, Ayodele Akele.
Akele, National Secretary of the National Conscience Party (NCP),
expressed this opinion at a civil society-media interaction event in
recognition of the 2013 Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism
awardees organized by the Civil Society Network Against Corruption
(CISNAC) in Lagos on Monday.
“If there is a coup in this country, Obasanjo should be held
responsible. We don’t want a military intervention. Those of us here are
going to be the victims of military coup,’ said Akele.
“How can you write a letter to the president of a nation and you are
copying your fellow coupists? These are all professional coupists from
their records, Obasanjo, Babangida, Abdulsalami. You did not even copy
the civil society that went through all the rigours… these are dangerous
signals,” the activist stressed.
Akele also advised Nigerians to be ready for “the worst”, as, from
his point of view, Obasanjo, the former president, “drives” the nation
to a dangerous cliff.
He further called not to let Obasanjo and his “cohorts” to “set agenda for us”.
It will be recalled, that a Obasanjo’s letter to the President Goodluck Jonathan has been surrounded by much controversy, that has a new turn after Jonathan came up with a reply.
